| Description: |
Because the most valuable sugar maple trees are those with small hearts, foresters have long sought, without much success, to predict heart size in sugar maple. This lack of success may be due in part to a failure to distinguish true heartwood from discolored sapwood, or false heartwood. The overall goal of the proposed research is to develop and test methods and procedures that predict the amount of discolored heart of sugar maple, based on characteristics of the site and the tree. Predicting the development of true and false heartwood in sugar maple will be important not only to loggers and procurement foresters valuing timber sales but also to landowners and forest managers developing silvicultural prescriptions for sugar maple in the face of changing markets and environmental conditions. This knowledge will be transferred through field and videoconference workshops and how-to manuals. |
